Let’s Get Prepared! Day 20 – Can You Be a Minimalist AND Be Prepared?

It’s Day 20 of our Let’s Get Prepared! Challenge and this one is a bit more conceptual. If you read my blog, you know I often write about the principle of Minimalism. You might be asking, “Hey, Clever Girl! Isn’t being prepared and storing stuff you *might* need some day the opposite of living life as a Minimalist. Don’t I have to choose? ” Well, it’s worth wondering about. And I want to share with you why I think you CAN be a Minimalist and prepared!

I’ll start with an easy observation: Plenty of Emergency Preparations that don’t take up space, or take up minimal space:

  • Have a communication plan
  • Have a water filtration system, rather than bottles of water
  • Know how and having room to grow your own food rather than storing food
  • Know first-aid skills / know CPR
  • Know how to start a fire
  • Have your important documents and paperwork in order
  • Have an evacuation plan
  • Have an emergency notification / wireless alerts activated on a smartphone

But, more importantly, I don’t want anyone ever to be confused that being a Minimalist means you don’t own things. You do. What *is* critical for a minimalist is to evaluate what is owned based on true NEED. You’re going to be hard pressed to find a minimalist who says “I don’t need some basic first aid supplies in my home” or “I don’t need some spare batteries or a flashlight.”  So, at the core of this question, “Can you be a Minimalist AND be prepared?” the answer will always come down to being thoughtful about what you truly need.

Within minimalism, there is a resistance to owning things “just because I might need it some day”. Possessions should be purposeful, intentional, and with a realistic view of need in mind. You *can* be prepared, without keeping everything, “just in case”.

Today’s challenge:

Kind of “food for thought” day, but give some thought to the balance you would strike between “I want to be prepared” and “but I might NEED it some day!”
